Jihlava
The town of Jihlava is one of the oldest mining towns in the CR and
was founded near a rich deposit of silver ore in the middle of the
13th century. Numerous church sights (such as St. Jacob´s Church,
as well as some of the preserved citizen houses with Gothic vaults
and bowers and a part of a large Gothic fortification) demonstrate
town prosperity in the Middle Ages. In this period a labyrinth of
tunnels began to be dug. At present it is the second largest underground
complex which is open to public.
In the 14th century silver mining declined and the textile industry
began to be developed. The Jesuit Church of St. Ignac, which is the
most valuable monument from the Baroque period, dominates the large
rectangular square. Jihlava is today the natural centre of the Horacko
region and offers many cultural events and entertainment possibilities;
such as the ZOO park or the remarkable theatrical tradition or theatre.
Jihlava has a long musical tradition and hosts many musical festivities
and festivals, related to Renaissance master-singing. The master-singing
in Jihlava according to the tradition of south German towns is unique
in our country. |
